Social Bookmarking is just one of the newest things sweeping the internet and is becoming more and more popular.  Furthermore, it is a great way of attracting traffic to you and your Business.  But, you still may be asking, “What is Social Bookmarking anyway?“  In this article, I will answer that question and explain how simple Social Bookmarking is.

All internet users are familiar with the traditional way of how to bookmark a website using the “Add to Favorites” or “Bookmark” button on their web browsers like Firefox or Internet Explorer.  It allows you to save and organize your personal favorite websites for future use.  But, it is for your personal use only and is not shared.  Furthermore, if you bookmark a lot of sites, it can become disorganized and cumbersome, which defeats the whole purpose.

Social Bookmarking is like saving favorites on your browser, except you’re saving to a website.  It is a Social type of Web service that helps you organize, share, and discover resources within an online community.  In a sense, Social Bookmarking is an interesting way for internet users to help organize the web.

Most Social Bookmarking services are organized by users applying “tags” to content on a website.  Tags are keywords or phrases that describe what the website being bookmarked is about, making it easier to organize and remember later.  Usually the websites will allow you to add as many tags to a bookmark as you like.  The website then allows you to share your bookmarks with other users and you will be able to view other users bookmarks, as well.  When you view other users bookmarks, you can find new blogs to read, new ideas and new communities to join for further networking.  When other users see your bookmarks they can comment about them and even vote on the content, creating interaction among the community of users.  Users quickly discover a whole new way to discover web pages that they may never have discovered otherwise.

Social Bookmarking sites are free and easy to use and are good for internet users in many ways.  They not only help keep you organized and keep your important websites safe.  But, more importantly, they are a great way to make your posts public and raise awareness of your website.  Giving you the ability to direct traffic to your website that you might otherwise have missed.  Social Bookmarking is a very powerful tool in your internet marketing toolkit.
